Blood pressure clinic

Our specialist hypertension (blood pressure) team will care for you during pregnancy if:

  • you had high blood pressure or kidney dysfunction before your pregnancy
  • you had high blood pressure during a previous pregnancy
  • you develop high blood pressure during the pregnancy
  • you are at higher risk from high blood pressure

The team is made up of:

  • a consultant obstetrician
  • a hypertension specialist senior midwife
  • two doctor fellow registrars.

Appointments

Usually, you will continue to have routine midwifery appointments with a community midwife. You will also have extra appointments with the hypertension midwife.

If your pregnancy is high-risk or complex, you may see the hypertension midwife for all your midwifery appointments.

Our midwifery booking appointments are on Tuesday mornings. Other routine appointments with the hypertension midwife are on Thursday afternoons.

What to expect

  • Discussion about your high blood pressure and your pregnancy care
  • Personalised schedule of care and appointments
  • Management of symptoms and medication
  • More regular ultrasound scans
  • Signposting to evidence-based information, to help your decision making
  • Information on research trials that may be relevant to you
  • Monthly joint clinic with kidney consultant for complex care planning
  • Six-week follow-up after the birth, to update on care and medication, and give advice for future pregnancies
  • If your condition was complex, you will be offered a review six months after the birth

We aim to manage your blood pressure without admitting you to hospital. This can mean frequent monitoring appointments, which we will discuss with you.

Where possible, your specialist appointments will be scheduled on the same day. This is to reduce your number of visits to the hospital.
