Maternal medicine
Our team of midwives care for women and birthing people who have underlying health conditions. We are an experienced, long-established team who work closely alongside obstetric doctors, dieticians, nurses and other specialists to provide integrated care during and after pregnancy and birth.
If you are receiving care from a medical specialist already, you will be supported to continue your regular medical care alongside your maternity appointments. We will work with the medical teams to offer our advice and expertise and advocate for your choices around the pregnancy. We aim to support each woman and birthing person to develop a personalised plan of care, taking into consideration your specific medical condition(s).
You will be offered an initial midwife booking appointment where we will assess your needs and recommend the best pathway of care for you and your baby. We will then offer you:
- routine pregnancy appointments with a midwife to discuss your wishes for birth and prepare for the baby
- clinics where you will have access to obstetric and medical doctors, clinical nurse specialists and allied health professionals including dieticians, alongside midwives from the Maternal Medicine Team
- an appointment with the obstetrician to finalise a plan and your preferences for birth
You may be referred to our team for a range of conditions including (but are not limited to):
- diabetes (types 1 and 2)
- cystic fibrosis
- HIV
- sickle cell disease or thalassaemia
- neurological conditions
- inflammatory bowel disease conditions
