Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education
We are one of the top teaching Trusts in the UK and a leading provider of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education (PGMDE). Situated in South East London, the Trust serves a large and diverse local population and provides regional tertiary care services across many specialties. We currently have more than 700 doctors and dentists in training.
The PGMDE team is the first port of call for any queries about training or education for junior doctors. We are always on hand to assist and answer any questions.

- The Weston Education Centre (WEC) is the hub for medical training and development at King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill.
- The Education Centre, is the hub for training at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in Bromley.
PGMDE team goals
Our top four priorities are:
1. Complete the implementation of the new Internal Medicine Training (IMT); by developing a compliant IMT3 programme, which positively impacts service delivery and provides a net increase in the number and competence of junior doctors.
2. Provide our colleagues across the Trust with appropriate support to address the challenges identified in trainee feedback in some specialties.
3. Complete the implementation of MBBS Curriculum 2020 in a way that maintains, and continuously improves on, current high levels of student satisfaction.
4. Develop leadership development programmes for consultants, clinical leads and clinical directors in conjunction with the Medical Director’s Office.
Training and CPD
Undergraduate Medical Degree Programme: MBBS
Studying for an MBBS is the first qualification at the very start of your medical career, before Foundation Programme training.
At King’s we have 152 Foundation Doctors who are based across King’s College Hospital (Denmark Hill) and the PRUH. These recently qualified doctors are supported by the PGMDE team in all aspects of their work and training in the early years of their career.
Post Foundation training
The PGMDE team work closely with all specialties across the Trust to support the education and training for all higher specialty programmes for our trainee doctors.
Speciality Lead Registrar (SLR) programme
The SLR programme is a four-module accredited programme which is run monthly for registrars (ST4 +) in readiness for their consultant posts.
It covers key aspects of modern leadership and management in the NHS and beyond.

Consultants and locally employed doctors
We offer opportunities for faculty development, leadership and management, and teaching skills.
We run a comprehensive simulation training programme. Clinical staff can hone their medical and surgical skills in the safe, controlled environment of our dedicated simulation training facilities. They can be found at the Conference Centre at the Weston Education Centre (WEC), King’s College Hospital and the Education Centre at the PRUH. Facilities include a state-of-the-art patient simulator, patient monitoring equipment and surgical skills equipment.

Library services for staff and students on placement at the PRUH, Orpington Hospital, Queen Mary’s Hospital or Beckenham Beacon are delivered at the PRUH Education Centre Library. The Library is open from 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and provides access to a quiet study space with computers as well as a multi-professional collection of textbooks and support materials. Qualified information professionals provide information skills training and literature search services.
