King’s Critical Care Pathfinder Group

The Pathfinder Group welcomes patients and relatives who have had experience of critical care at the Trust or other hospitals.

We meet four times a year at King’s College Hospital to review King’s Critical Care projects, service developments, strategy and policies. We also have our own projects and provide patient and public feedback on research projects.

Pathfinder projects include:

  • advising on the design of the King’s Critical Care Centre, including the roof garden
  • improving communications between our service and GPs
  • improving facilities for relatives, including enabling overnight stays.

Topics we’ve discussed include:

  • improving the move (step down) from critical care to other inpatient wards for patients and their families
  • how to enable patients with tracheal tubes and tracheostomies to communicate better with their relatives and our staff.
  • improving the critical care environment for patients, such as sound, lighting, mobility, nutrition, entertainment and exercise
  • how to reduce patients’ risk of delirium (confusion) while on critical care
  • improving support for our staff to ensure their well-being.
