How we use AI to improve care
We are always looking for ways to improve care for patients and working practices for our staff.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now an important part of this. AI refers to computers performing tasks that usually need human thinking. For example, drafting and summarising text, finding patterns in data or images, or analysing large amounts of information to improve processes.
Across the NHS, many organisations are investigating how AI can improve patient care. For example, it may be able to help speed up diagnosis of some health conditions, reduce waiting times, or streamline administrative tasks.
We are proud to be one of a small number of Trusts working with NHS England to develop and test new technologies like AI before they are rolled out nationally. This means our patients benefit first from cutting-edge tools that make care safer, faster, or more personalised.
How is AI used in patient care at the Trust?
In direct patient care
For a small number of conditions and in a limited number of cases, AI may be used in direct patient care. For example, it may be used by your doctor to help detect bowel cancer.
If your care team think using AI can improve your treatment, they will explain this to you, and ask for your consent. They will let you know the benefits, risks, and alternatives, so you can make an informed decision.
In administration
This is when AI is used in the systems and processes that help us provide care. For example, using voice recognition to produce first drafts of clinical notes and patient letters.
Has it been properly tested?
Yes. Every AI tool we use has been rigorously tested and approved for NHS use. We only adopt AI tools that meet clinical, ethical, and safety standards.
Is AI used instead of doctors or nurses?
No. When AI is used in patient care, it supports our clinicians, but it does not replace them. Doctors and nurses still make the final decisions and provide personal care.
How is my data kept safe?
We take your data privacy seriously. All AI tools go through strict NHS safety and privacy checks. Many use anonymised data, and all data use follows UK law and NHS guidelines.
Are private companies involved in providing AI?
Some AI tools are developed by private companies but are used under NHS-approved contracts. We do not sell patient data, and all suppliers must meet NHS standards.
What are the benefits of AI for patients?
AI may be able to help you:
- get a faster diagnosis
- avoid unnecessary appointments
- be prioritised if you need urgent treatment
- get more consistent and timely care
How does the Trust make sure it uses AI responsibly?
We follow national guidance and have internal governance processes in place. Each AI project is reviewed by clinical and data protection experts to make sure it is safe, effective, and fair.
