Cardiology

What we do

King’s Cardiology service provides a full range of adult heart care, including:

  • Invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures
  • State-of-the-art cardiac interventional treatments (coronary, structural and electrophysiological)
  • Outpatient services that include community outreach.

We provide both planned (elective) and emergency care for a large regional population. This includes the UK’s first 24/7 primary angioplasty service for heart attack patients, a life-saving alternative to clot-busting drugs. It involves having a tiny balloon inserted under local anaesthetic and then inflated to clear the blocked artery carrying blood to the heart.

Our service also specialises in new treatments for heart valve disease, including transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This minimally invasive surgery is a lower risk procedure for high risk patients and enables them to go home quicker.

In addition, we have a large and active research programme investigating many aspects of heart disease.

The department has close links with the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic (RACPC) and the Heart failure and Cardiac health and rehabilitation services.
