Neuro-oncology

What we do

King’s neuro-oncology service is one of the largest in the UK and Europe and sees patients referred nationally and internationally.

Our team of neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, neuro-pathologists, neuro-radiologists, palliative care (pain relief) doctors, clinical nurse specialists and therapists treats patients with all types of brain and spine tumours. They combine clinical expertise with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure our patients receive the very best care and treatment.

We run specialised multidisciplinary clinics as well as children’s (paediatric) clinics. We also provide the UK’s only dedicated Teenage and Young Adult Service for central nervous system tumours.

We have a brain tumour support group which is held on the first Monday of every month at St Thomas’ Hospital. For more information, please call the Neuro-oncology Co-ordinator.

See our cancer care webpages for more details of the cancer care provided at King’s.

Inter-hospital transfers

Many patients with neurological problems can be managed at their local hospital. However, some patients may require specialised investigation and treatment at a regional neuroscience centre, such as King’s.

Each patient will be looked after by a team of health professionals during their stay at King’s, and will receive carefully planned investigations and treatments.

Transferring back to your local hospital

Patients may be transferred back to their local hospital from King’s for continued care, treatment, and/or rehabilitation as well as discharge planning with local services in the community. Transfers back to local hospitals are also known as repatriation. The aim is to get patients home as soon as possible, but it may take several days for a bed to become available.

At the local hospital, you may continue to receive care and medical treatment. The team there will carefully assess your care needs so that you can go home safely.

For more information see the Inter-hospital transfer process (neuroscience) patient information leaflet below.

Preparing for your appointment

If you are being seen in the outpatient clinic you are likely to have had an MRI scan and we will usually have the results.

If you have not had an MRI scan, please call the Neuro-oncology Co-ordinator.

If you are waiting to hear about an MRI appointment at King’s, please contact the MRI appointments office.

Routine Referrals

Routine referrals are reviewed at the weekly Neuro-oncology MDT meeting held every Friday.

To ensure a referral is included in the review meeting, please complete the Neuro-oncology referral form below and email it, by no later than 4pm Wednesday, to the Neuro-oncology team at [email protected]. Referrals received after this time will be reviewed at the following Friday’s meeting.

A Neuro-oncology referral form must be completed and sent to King’s Neuro-oncology team for each referrred patient. All investigations – i.e. CT/MRI – must be image-linked to King’s College Hospital Radiology Department.

Emergency Referrals

Urgent referrals for suspected malignancies can be made via the two week wait pathway.

Other acute referrals from hospitals
Go to the acute neurosurgery referrals page for advice on how to refer using the inter-hospital system.

Other acute referrals from GPs
Patients should be referred to their local A&E department for urgent assessment.
