Movement disorders and Parkinson’s

What we do

King’s College Hospital provides the local movement disorders service for our area and is the Regional Neurology Centre for South East London, Kent and Medway, seeing more complex patients with movement disorders referred by other neurologists in the region.

Our department provides specialist care for a wide range of movement disorders, including:

  • Parkinson’s disease and Parkinsonism
  • dystonia, ataxia, tremor, restless legs syndrome, chorea, myoclonus, ballism, tics, Tourette syndrome and other related movement disorders
  • movement disorders treated with botulinum toxin
  • care for young adults with deep brain stimulation transitioning from paediatric to adult services

King’s College Hospital has been recognised by the Parkinson’s Foundation, a US-based international organisation, as a Centre of Excellence for Parkinson’s care, research and education. This designation reflects our delivery of high-quality, multidisciplinary Parkinson’s services that meet internationally recognised standards.

The service is also organised in multidisciplinary teams that include medical and nursing staff, allied healthcare professionals and administrative staff.

Research

Our centre integrates clinical care with research across the service. It has an established research programme with interdisciplinary collaboration, peer-reviewed publications and a contribution to the development of assessment scales used internationally. Research activity includes clinical trials and early-phase studies.

An expert patient group, the Community for Research Involvement and Support by people with Parkinson’s (CRISP), supports public and patient involvement in research. The group contributes to research design, helps raise awareness of research opportunities, and encourages people with Parkinson’s disease and their carers to discuss research participation with their clinical teams.

Education

We are an international training centre for movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease, supporting the education of neurologists, geriatricians, specialist nurses and other healthcare professionals. Educational activity includes regular academic meetings and clinical case presentations. Fellowship opportunities are offered through the Movement Disorder Society and the European Academy of Neurology, alongside self-funded overseas fellowships.
