Referrals for children and young people

King’s offers a Shared Care service for children and young people with cancer. This means that they can have some of their treatment nearer to home at Variety Children’s Hospital@King’s – one of the UK’s leading centres for children – and some at one of the London Principle Treatment Centres (PTCs): the Royal Marsden, Great Ormond Street or University College London hospitals.

How does shared care work?

If your child has suspected cancer they will be referred to one of the London PTCs for diagnosis.

If cancer is confirmed and your child lives in Lambeth, Southwark or Lewisham, the PTC oncology team will decide their treatment plan and refer them to King’s Shared Care service for some of their treatment. This may include chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, depending on the type of cancer they have. For example, if your child needs regular outpatient chemotherapy, they may have it at King’s.

You will be able to come in and meet members of our team, including your child’s key worker, and find out more about their planned treatment and how our Shared Care service works.

Who to contact

At your child’s first appointment at King’s (after they have been diagnosed) you will be given written information about their named key worker, including a pager number. Their key worker will be one of the Macmillan Paediatric Oncology clinical nurse specialists.
