Pain management

What we do

Our Pain Management Team, including consultants and nurse specialists, provides care to adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Outpatients are referred to us by GPs, musculoskeletal physiotherapists, and other hospital specialities.

Outpatient Pain Service

Our chronic pain clinic assesses and manages pain conditions that can cause long-term difficulties and interfere with daily activities, mood, sleep, and work. Our doctors work closely with different specialities and other health professionals. We offer joint clinics with neurosurgeons, neurologists, and urologists for a more collaborative approach to treatment.

We provide a range of pain management options to help people manage their symptoms more effectively. This can help to improve their quality of life. Management options can include medication, physiotherapy, various injections and interventions. We also refer people to other specialities when necessary or advise the GP for community referrals.

At our outpatient clinic, we have expertise in managing complex spine pain. We hold a weekly multidisciplinary meeting with neurosurgeons to ensure the best possible treatment for our patients. We manage complex cancer pain and work closely with St Christopher’s Hospice in Sydenham.

Inpatient Pain Service

The Inpatient Pain Team is responsible for providing pain management advice to patients admitted to the hospital, particularly those with severe and complicated conditions who may be on complex drug regimes.

The team specialises in managing pain therapies like epidural and patient-controlled analgesia after operations. We also offer guidance on pain management to medical wards and the Emergency Department.
