Biography
Mr Sasindran Ramar is a consultant robotic upper gastrointestinal, metabolic/bariatric and general surgeon at King’s College Hospital, and an honorary senior clinical lecturer at King’s College London. He is the lead for clinical audit in the Department of Surgery.
He qualified in medicine in 1992, completing his general surgical training and a fellowship in minimal access surgery in India before moving to the UK. He was appointed as a consultant surgeon in 2012 and joined King’s College Hospital in 2015.
Mr Ramar now practises robotic surgery, having completed the transition from laparoscopic to a wholly robotic practice within 15 months. He has performed over 550 robotic procedures, including robotic gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, revisional bariatric surgery, cholecystectomy for elective and urgent gallbladder disease, anti-reflux and hiatus hernia surgery, and inguinal, ventral and incisional hernia repair with abdominal wall reconstruction.
He operates on both multiport and single-port robotic platforms in the UK performing single-port robotic cholecystectomy and inguinal hernia repair, in which the whole operation is carried out through one small incision around the umbilicus. He also proctors and trains other consultant surgeons in robotic technique across the UK and Europe.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Ramar teaches and supervises surgical trainees and medical students at King’s, and leads audit and outcomes work in robotic surgery.
Research
Mr Ramar’s current research and presented work is focused on robotic operative practice and outcomes rather than laboratory science. Recent single-surgeon procedural series and technique work presented at AUGIS, BOMSS, the Society of Robotic Surgery, the Clinical Robotic Surgery Association and the IBC Oxford World Congress includes:
- outcomes of robotic cholecystectomy across Parkland grades in elective and urgent settings
- single-surgeon outcomes and patient-reported outcomes in robotic bariatric surgery
- a two-layered closure technique for jejunojejunal anastomosis in robotic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- the learning curve and transition to a wholly robotic practice
- robotic stapling technique and staple selection in bariatric surgery
- single-port robotic cholecystectomy and inguinal hernia repair
