What we do

King's hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HPB) service provides all-round care for people with liver, pancreatic and gall bladder disorders.

Our team offers specialist investigations and care for conditions such as:

  • primary cancers of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas
  • benign liver tumours
  • secondary liver tumours that have spread from breast, colorectal or other primary sites
  • neuroendocrine tumours (NETs)
  • chronic and acute pancreatitis.

The treatments we offer include:

  • liver, pancreatic and biliary resection
  • radio-frequency ablation of primary and secondary liver tumours
  • chemo-embolisation for primary liver tumours
  • bland embolisation for liver tumours
  • photo-dynamic therapy (PDT) for biliary tumours
  • Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) for primary or secondary liver tumours subject to individual patient funding via their primary care trust
  • sorafenib for type of liver cancer called hepatocullular carcinoma (HCC) subject to individual patient funding via their PCT or through a clinical trial
  • specialist endoscopic procedures
  • radionuclide therapies for tumours that start in the nerve cells that produce hormones (neuroendocrine).

  • benign liver tumours: focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH), adenoma
  • biliary cystadenoma
  • primary biliary cancers: cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer
  • primary pancreatic cancer
  • neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) - primary and secondary
  • secondary liver tumours from a colorectal, breast or other primary
  • chronic and acute pancreatitis
  • complex benign hepato-biliary and pancreatic conditions.
