Haematology

What we do

We provide specialist diagnostic investigations and treatment for a wide range of blood, bone marrow and spleen disorders.

We treat a wide range of conditions including all types of anaemia, platelet disorders, polycythaemia (high red cell count), iron metabolism disorders such as haemochromatosis (iron overload) and abnormal white cell counts.

Our service also offers specialist transfusion advice for pregnant women, patients with special transfusion requirements and patients who refuse blood products.

Conditions we treat

Our service has various clinics that cover the following conditions/areas:

• anaemia (iron/B12/folate deficiency, anaemia of chronic disease, autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, anaemia of pregnancy)
• disorders of iron metabolism (haemochromatosis)
• neutropenia
• polycythaemia/thrombocytosis
• pregnancy-related immune disorders (foetal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, haemolytic disease of the foetus)
• preparation for surgery/delivery in Jehovah’s Witnesses and patients with multiple red cell antibodies
• therapeutic plasma or red cell exchange
• patients with problems related to blood transfusion.
