Motor nerve

What we do

King’s Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Care and Research Centre is a national centre of excellence for the diagnosis and care of people with the condition. We also treat patients with other motor nerve disorders: neurological conditions that cause weakness because of nerve degeneration in the brain or spinal cord and which usually get worse over months or years. In addition, we see patients with unknown conditions to try to reach a diagnosis.

We run a weekly clinic where patients are seen first by a neurologist for diagnosis. Sometimes further tests are needed before they can make a diagnosis and decide on treatment. Other members of the clinic team include a specialist nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, dietician, and a palliative care consultant who advises on managing difficult symptoms. We also have access to a respiratory consultant, if needed.

Extra support is provided by the Clinic Co-ordinator, who attends the clinic to ensure patients see the relevant team members and liaises with local services to ensure patients have the assistance they need.

Patients can be referred to our MND Care and Research Centre specifically to take part in clinical trials.

Conditions we treat

We provide comprehensive treatment for motor neurone disease and other motor nerve-related disorders.

We accept GP referrals for patients from Lewisham, Lambeth and Southwark. For patients outside these areas we usually require a referral from a local neurologist.

King’s MND Care and Research Centre is a centre for clinical trials and patients can be referred specifically for participation in clinical trials when appropriate.

What is required before referring a patient

Patients should attend with copies of relevant investigations (if they have been performed), particularly EMG, creatine kinase and MRI.
