Biography
Dr Bainton is a Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry at King’s College Hospital, in the Department of Psychological Medicine. He works in the Mental Health Liaison Service, and specialises in the management of urgent and emergency mental health problems, as well as mental health in chronic conditions, particularly diabetes as well as kidney, liver and gastroenterology conditions.
Dr Bainton completed medical school at the University of Liverpool and intercalated an MSc in Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, researching serotonin and its effects on executive cognitive function. In 2010 he moved to London to complete core and higher training in Psychiatry as part of the Maudsley Training Scheme. He became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2012.
Dr Bainton is also trained as a Psychotherapist in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London.
Alongside clinical work, Dr Bainton has interests in the development of reflective practice and emotional resilience amongst medical students and doctors. He established ‘Picture of Health’, a special study module for medical students at King’s College London. Designed to improve these skills using visual arts, the study module has run for five years.
Dr Bainton was previously a Clinical Fellow to the National Medical Director (2015-2016), based at the General Medical Council in London.
