Vascular ultrasound

What we do

We carry out investigations for suspected diseases of the circulation (vascular disease).

All the tests are non-invasive and are mainly ultrasound scans (sometimes known as duplex or Doppler ultrasound).

Conditions that we look for include deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and atheroslcerosis (narrowing of the arteries).

Preparing for your appointment

You do not need to make any special preparations for the tests, but you will need to remove some of your clothing so we can access the area we want to scan.

Conditions we treat

We offer diagnostic ultrasound services for vascular disease. This includes:

  • assessment of cerebrovascular disease
  • assessment of peripheral vascular disease
  • aortic aneurysm screening.

What is required before referring a patient

Preparation is rarely required. If any preparation is needed, advice will be given to patients.

Booking a patient at King’s

Routine Referrals

Vascular ultrasound scans are performed at the request of internal consultants, therefore a referral needs to be made to the appropriate medical or surgical team, which will in turn request the appropriate test from us.

Emergency Referrals

Emergency referrals should go through the appropriate medical or surgical team.

Contact the on-call vascular registrar for vascular emergencies or the anti-coagulation team for possible DVTs.

The vascular laboratory is open from 8.30am-5pm and can be contacted on 020 3299 3711.

We do not operate an out-of-hours service.
