Maxillofacial prosthetics and reconstruction

What we do

The Cranio-Maxillofacial Prosthetics Unit provides specialist treatment for patients with facial disfigurements, including prosthetics reconstruction using implants, splints and prostheses.

We also provide a highly specialised service to King’s Maxillofacial Surgery Department and the Major Trauma and Accident Regional Centre for South East London. Our Clinical Maxillofacial Prosthetists (MPTs) work with multidisciplinary teams across King’s and Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust. As a centre of excellence we aim to provide our patients with the best all-round care.

Our key areas of provision include:

  • facial prosthetic reconstruction after craniofacial surgery because of trauma, stroke, congenital birth defects or syndromes, head and neck cancer
  • pre-operative 3D planning for surgical skull and face reconstruction
  • pre-operative planning and splints for facial deformities surgery (orthognathic)
  • breast and body prosthetic reconstruction
  • splint therapy for disorders of the temporomandibular joint (the hinge joint where the lower jaw joins the skull).
  • medical devices for sleep apnoea (interrupted breathing)
  • scar management.

Our outpatient services include:

  • facial prostheses for features such as the ear, nose and orbital area that holds the eyes, using retained implants or medical adhesives
  • artificial eyes including scleral shells which fit over the existing eye
  • splint therapy medical devices for keloid scars
  • nipple prostheses
  • finger prostheses
