Acute Dental Care
What we do
During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, if you need urgent dental help call NHS 111. You will be directed to an urgent dental care hub close to you. At this time we are providing a reduced service for a limited range of urgent problems using our clinical triage team. The range of dental problems include conditions such as:
- severe dental infections
- facial swellings
- recent dental injury (trauma).
We provide minimal treatment only, such as pain relief, tooth removal and temporary fillings.
We do not provide:
- routine dental treatment
- repairs to dentures
- recementing of crowns and bridges.
Contact your local NHS dental practice about these treatments. To find a local dentist, go to www.nhs.uk.
What to expect at your appointment
Contact NHS 111 for urgent dental care. If you are referred to us, our clinical triage team will assess your problem. We may offer you treatment, or you may be advised to go to your local NHS dentist for treatment.
Treatment at the clinic is provided by dentists in training and junior clinical staff, under the supervision of senior clinicians. This means we can see fewer patients during university holidays, including around Christmas, around Easter, and June to mid-September.
We are an appointment-only service
In August 2019 we changed from a walk-in clinic to an appointment clinic. This was to improve the service for patients. For more details about why the change has been made, see the Acute Dental Care Service change page.
