#NewProfilePic for October 2024

01 October 2024 - Every month, a different member of staff will feature as our #NewProfilePic on social media.

This October our staff profile picture features Mr Tahir Farooq, Consultant Ophthalmologist Specialising in Oculoplastic, Lid, Lacrimal and Orbital Surgery at King’s.

What does your role consist of?

“I work in outpatient clinics and operating theatres treating patients with a variety of eye conditions such as cataracts, eyelid skin cancer, droopy eyelids, blocked tear ducts and orbital diseases.”

How long have you been working with King’s, and why do you like it?

“I have been working at King’s since 2017 as a consultant and since joining I have developed a comprehensive oculoplastic service which has helped me meet the needs of our patients in our community. This has been very satisfying and it has been a real privilege to serve our patients.”

What makes your role special to you and the patients you care for?

“As a consultant, I am able to deliver the highest quality care to my patients through a joint collaborative effort with all the staff within the ophthalmology department. This gives the patients confidence in the care that we provide and helps us treat patients to the highest standards.”

Any special moments that you’ve experienced at work?

“A memorable experience involved a trauma case where I performed an emergency reconstructive eyelid surgery on a patient who had suffered a deep, severe cut near his eye. The outcome not only restored the function and appearance of the eyelid but also greatly reassured the patient. The stitches were carefully placed, making them virtually invisible, which allowed the eye to look completely natural post-surgery.

“I’ve also treated older patients with complex health conditions who believed they were too old for surgery. Using minimally invasive, small-incision techniques, I’ve been able to improve their vision with a quicker recovery time, allowing them to regain their confidence and independence in safely navigating their daily lives.”

Is there anything interesting about your role at King’s that people may not know?

“I am active in teaching medical students and training doctors. I also oversee doctors from abroad who come to King’s ophthalmology for further experience.”
