What does your role consist of?
“The Pre-Registration Nurse Education Team plays a vital role in supporting and guiding student nurses throughout their training to become fully qualified professionals. We help students develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to provide safe and effective patient care. By working closely with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), we coordinate student placements and ensure individual learning needs are met. As role models, we uphold professionalism and maintain high standards of care. Additionally, we collaborate with practice assessors, supervisors, student champions, Practice Development Nurses, and managers to support student assessments and monitor their progress. Overall, our team is essential in preparing the next generation of nurses for successful careers in healthcare.”
How long have you been working with King’s, and why do you like it?
“I have been working with King’s for almost four and a half years now, and what I truly value about being part of this team is how consistently everyone upholds the King’s values. It is a kind, respectful, and supportive environment where teamwork and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do.”
What inspired you to specialise in this particular field?
“My passion is supporting and empowering others to grow both professionally and personally. I find it incredibly rewarding to help shape the next generation of nurses by sharing knowledge, building confidence, and promoting best practice. Through teaching and mentoring, I can contribute to improving patient care on a larger scale by ensuring nurses are well-prepared and confident in their roles.”
What makes your role special to you and the patients you care for?
“The opportunity to support nurses in developing their skills and confidence, which ultimately improves patient care. By empowering nurses through education, I help create a safer, more effective, and compassionate healthcare environment. Knowing that my work contributes to better outcomes for patients and fosters a culture of continuous learning is deeply rewarding.”
Any special moments that you’ve experienced at work?
“When I witnessed a patient’s condition improve significantly after the care and support provided by our nursing team in Surgery. At that time, I was part of the Practice Development Nurse (PDN) team. Being involved in that journey – knowing that the education, teamwork, and dedication behind the scenes contributed to the patient’s recovery – was incredibly rewarding. It truly reminded me why compassionate and skilled nursing care makes such a profound difference in people’s lives.”
Can you describe how you support families through some of the most challenging moments of their lives?
“This requires patience, empathy and clear communication. We consistently emphasise to our students the importance of listening attentively to families’ concerns, providing honest yet gentle explanations, and offering reassurance whenever possible. By modelling presence and compassion, we help students understand how to support families with respect and sensitivity during difficult times.”
Is there anything interesting about your role at King’s that people may not have known?
“It’s how much work goes on behind the scenes to support and train the next generation of nurses. While patients see the care they receive, they might not realise that we spend a lot of time mentoring, teaching and coordinating with universities to make sure student nurses are ready to provide safe and high-quality care.”
