Maternity services at King’s – providing safe and compassionate care

02 July 2026 - Having a baby is one of the most important experiences for women, birthing people and their families, and listening to those who access maternity care at King’s is important to us.

As a result, we fully appreciate that recent reviews of NHS maternity services may be unsettling for people about to give birth, or those in the early stages of pregnancy.

The reviews in question include Donna Ockenden’s review of maternity services at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, and the Independent Investigation into Maternity and Neonatal Services in England, led by Baroness Valerie Amos.

Whilst King’s was not the subject or focus of either review, we fully recognise the finding and recommendations set out in both reports, and we are committed to improving maternity services at King’s College Hospital (Denmark Hill), and the Princess Royal University Hospital.

There are learnings in both reviews for all providers of maternity services across the NHS, and we will do everything we can to improve the care our teams provide for the thousands of people who access our services every year.

We will also continue to work with our local Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership to ensure we hear the views of people using our services, and act on the feedback they provide.

Tracey Carter, Chief Nurse and Executive Director of Midwifery, said:

“It is vital that anyone accessing our maternity services feels safe, and confident they will receive a high standard for care. Our teams work hard to support women and birthing people under our care, but we also know we can do better in many areas.

“Like all NHS Trusts, we are reviewing the maternity services we provide in light of the Ockenden and Amos reviews, and we will make any changes that are needed to improve the experience of mothers, their babies and families.”

If you are under the care of our maternity teams, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the team if you have a question or concern. We want to hear from you.
