Local school children give top marks to King’s

13 October 2025 - Jessop Primary school students visited Variety Children Hospital to help improve services

The Variety Children’s Hospital at King’s College Hospital welcomed 10 Jessop Primary School pupils for a visit on Friday 19 September to inspect the hospital school, children’s wards and sample the hospital food menu.

The event was organised as part of the King’s Young Ambassadors Programme, where a group of patient ambassadors aged 9 – 11 years old from Jessop Primary school regularly visit the hospital to review services for younger patients and their families, and participate in health-related education and wellbeing sessions.

As part of the visit, children also took part in a Q&A with King’s staff to find out more about different careers in the NHS, before a hospital food tasting session, sampling meals including pasta with vegetables, and waffles with chocolate sauce.

Sarah Harris, Head of Nursing for Variety Children’s Hospital at King’s, said: “This session gave a snapshot of the hospital environment in a fun and informative format that hopefully captured the children’s imaginations. Involving our local community in developing our services is really important to us, and the children’s feedback will help us make sure the hospital is welcoming and friendly for our younger patients.”

Stephanie Serbis, Family Link Worker at Jessop Primary School and Children’s centre, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed the whole morning, and getting to try out some delicious lunch samples made their day. This was a trip that our children will remember for a long time to come, and it might just have inspired them to become a dietician, a nurse, a helicopter pilot, a chef or one of the other many roles within Team King’s, healthcare services and the NHS.”
