King’s welcomes two new fellows

19 May 2022 - Akish Luintel and Robert Miller have become the Trust's first Clinical Artificial Intelligence (AI) fellows

We are pleased to announce that two fellows in Clinical Artificial Intelligence (AI) have joined King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

These are the first fellowships of this kind, bringing clinical AI expertise to medical training. The programme is year-long (June 2022-July 2023), and fellows will be trained to deliver AI in healthcare by undertaking AI projects in a live hospital setting. They will be supervised by world experts in clinical AI.

Akish Luintel joins us from the Royal Free Hospital as an ST6 in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine; and Robert Miller, from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital as an ST5 in Plastic Surgery.

Akish said: “I am interested in global health, equity and digital health. I have worked at NHS Digital, where I was clinical lead on projects such as COVID-19 Risk Stratification, Shielding, and Oximetry @home.

“These projects have made me realise the potential for digital health, to improve patients’ lives as well as supporting clinicians. I hope this fellowship will build on these experiences to improve patient and staff experience.”

Robert said: “I am excited to be part of this ground-breaking and dynamic artificial intelligence fellowship. The programme will allow me to be at the forefront of AI integration within the NHS, which will form a key part of healthcare delivery and research in the future.

“I believe AI will offer unique opportunities within surgery to improve the management and outcomes of our patients and I look forward to exploring how this can be achieved as an AI fellow.”
