King’s Trauma Director awarded Jubilee Medal

16 December 2022 - Dr Malcolm Tunnicliff was awarded the accolade for services to pre-hospital care

Dr Malcolm Tunnicliff, Emergency Medicine Consultant and Clinical Director for Trauma, has been awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for his work in pre-hospital care.

As well as his role at King’s, for the last 17 years Malcolm has also worked for Air Ambulance Charity, Kent, Surrey and Sussex and has been a consultant with them for 10 years. In this role he works as part of a team to provide life-saving pre-hospital care to critically injured patients before and as they are transferred to a major trauma centre, such as King’s. Such interventions can include emergency chest and heart procedures, the delivery of emergency anaesthesia, and the administration of blood transfusions to patients suffering from life-threatening blood loss.

At the ceremony in Rochester Cathedral, Malcolm received the medal alongside other colleagues in the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). Commenting on the award, he said: “I’m very proud to have been awarded the Platinum Jubilee Medal. The honour is a reflection of the tireless work carried out by the whole KSS team and our wider trauma network to provide the highest standards of care to the most critically unwell patients.”

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal is a commemorative medal created to mark the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession in 1952. The medal recognises the dedication of emergency frontline workers.
