King’s calls on hairdressers to join volunteering team

04 June 2025 - The Trust is seeking qualified hairdressers and barbers

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is on the hunt for people who can bring their skills, knowledge and experience in hair styling to help give extra care and confidence to patients.

Patricia Mecinska, Assistant Director of Patient Experience at King’s, explained: “Many of our patients have been with us in hospital for days, weeks, or even months, and a visit from a hairdresser is a small act of care that makes a world of difference.

“We are looking for kind-hearted hairdressers and barbers with a few hours to spare, who can help bring some joy to patients when they need it most across our hospitals in London and Kent.”

One volunteer hairdresser helping patients at King’s College Hospital is Monica Best from Peckham’s Best Unisex Salon, who began volunteering in 2024.  She explained “My elderly aunt was bed-bound, and I looked after her hair until she passed away. I wanted to continue using my skills to help others.

“Every moment has been memorable, as it’s different for everyone I see. A smile and the patient’s appreciation have made it all worthwhile.”
