Charles Alexander steps down as Trust Chair

24 January 2024 - Charles Alexander is stepping down as Chair of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at the end of this month

Jane Bailey, Deputy Chair and Non-Executive Director, will take on the role of Acting Chair at the Trust from 1 February.

Charles will continue in his role as Chair for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which is unaffected by the decision announced today.

Charles has been Trust Chair since December 2022. From next month, however, King’s will return to having its own Chair of the Trust Board, with an announcement made shortly about future plans to recruit to the role.

King’s requires increased capacity at the non-executive leadership level so it can focus on financial recovery. Given the size and complexity of both King’s and Guy’s and St Thomas’, independent Board leadership for both Trusts is the best way to create the focus and capacity required.

Both Trusts will continue to strengthen their involvement in the South East London Acute Provider Collaborative, helping the south east London system as a whole to manage challenges and maximise opportunities for collaboration.

Professor Clive Kay, Chief Executive at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“I am grateful to Charles for his efforts over the past 12 months, and I know he will continue to play a vital leadership role in south east London as Chair of Guy’s and St Thomas’.”
