New approach to urology treatment at King’s

21 October 2026 - Patients are able to return home just hours after their surgery

The Urology Team at King’s has become the first in South London to offer treatment for enlarged prostate through a 15-minute outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic.

An enlarged prostate is a common problem experienced by men over 50. The condition can cause those affected to urinate much more frequently, affecting sleep and overall quality of life. The condition can also make it difficult to empty the bladder, increasing the risk of urinary tract infections.

Surgical treatment options include an iTIND procedure, where a device that reshapes prostate tissue is temporarily implanted, and Rezum, a steam treatment to help ease symptoms.

Typically, these procedures are performed in a surgical theatre. However, following a series of staff training sessions, the King’s Urology team is now offering this service as a standard outpatient procedure, with patients able to go home a few hours after surgery.

Mr Sanjith Gnanappiragasam, Consultant Urological Surgeon at King’s, said: “Delivering this type of treatment within 15 minutes as part of an outpatient clinic appointment has huge benefits for our patients. It makes treatment quicker, simpler and less disruptive, helping people get home sooner and back to everyday life.

“Since rolling out this new approach, we have treated five patients, and we hope many more will benefit. This will also help reduce waiting times for our patients and improve our efficiency, helping us make the most out of every minute of clinical time.”
