20 years of supporting liver transplant patients

28 September 2026 - The Listen support network, an organisation helping liver transplant patients at King’s College Hospital, is proudly marking its 20th anniversary this month.

Founded in 2006, Listen was created by a group of liver transplant patients in collaboration with liver specialists from King’s Liver Unit as a source of support for patients, both before and after their transplant.

Today, the group has over 360 members, with many former patients currently supporting those receiving treatment. Listen hosts monthly online meetings for members, with presentations by King’s specialists, followed by Q&A sessions on subjects including dietary needs, pharmacy support and the latest research. The meeting is then split into smaller discussion groups, in the presence of a mentor.

As well as a website offering information and advice, Listen also runs a Facebook group.

Sarah Coate, Lead Liver Transplant Coordinator at King’s, said: “Listen was founded with the aim of growing a supportive community for liver transplant patients, those on the waiting list hoping for a phone call, and families and carers through every stage of the transplant journey.

“For many of our patients, undergoing a liver transplant is a rare and often isolating experience. Being on the waiting list for a transplant can be an anxious, fearful and uncertain time, and having support from someone who has faced the same challenges, and who can talk about their life after their transplant, can make a huge difference.

“The support network is run by a team of dedicated volunteers who have first-hand experience of liver transplant, and who understand the difference that reassurance, peer support and shared experiences can make.”

Elaine Monument, a current Listen member, said: “Listen gives me invaluable access to a community whose help and guidance are priceless. They understand the journey we are on, and the uncertainty of it all. Knowing you can connect with people who have been through it means so much.”
