Liam Conlon MP visits PRUH diabetes service

20 October 2025 - The diabetes team discussed their nationally accredited service

Liam Conlon, MP for Beckenham and Penge, paid a visit to the diabetes service at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), the second service nationally to receive a Diabetes Care Accreditation Programme (DCAP) from the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).

The accreditation confirms that correct pathways, procedures and processes are in place to reduce diabetes-related hospital admissions, and that the team provides an excellent standard of care when supporting diabetes inpatients in every corner of the hospital. The accreditation assessors were particularly impressed with how the service has developed from scratch in the last two years.

During the visit, Mr Conlon met Dr Adrian Li, Consultant in Diabetes and Clinical Lead, who has spearheaded the work to develop the diabetes service, alongside the multidisciplinary team of diabetes nurses, registrars, specialist pharmacist, specialist dietician and podiatrist.

The team discussed with Mr Conlon the reasons for achieving the national accreditation, which include:

  • The development of the Reducing Admissions in Diabetes (RAID) service, which aims to reduce hospital admissions in diabetes patients presenting to the Emergency Department with high blood glucose levels.
  • The introduction of a discharge clinic (DWARD), which aims to see diabetes patients within a week of discharge from hospital to reduce length of stays whilst maintaining patient safety.
  • The development of a formalised pre-operative pathway, which helps optimise diabetes for patients on surgery waiting lists, resulting in reduced cancellations and improved outcomes.
  • The establishment of a service supporting cancer patients who require urgent scans that can be delayed due to abnormal blood glucose levels or chemotherapy treatment that can cause high blood glucose levels and risk admission.

The diabetes team also discussed several pertinent local issues, including the number of people in the borough of Bromley with diabetes and the associated health issues, which include sight and foot problems, the effects of alcohol on diabetes, gestational diabetes and diabetes linked to social deprivation.

Dr Adrian Li said: “Everyone in the diabetes team here at PRUH is immensely proud of the accreditation we achieved earlier this year, and we were delighted to welcome Liam Conlon MP to discuss the work we are doing to support local patients with diabetes.

“At any one time, nearly 30 percent of our inpatients have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes and will require care from our team. With the dedication of medical, nursing, pharmacy and therapy colleagues, we have built a fantastic service in which patients can have confidence in.”
