King’s supports opening of new hospital in Nigeria through partnership with Afreximbank

A new hospital in Abuja, Nigeria, has opened thanks to a pioneering collaboration between King’s and Afreximbank, a Nigerian financial institution that aims to stimulate, expand and develop African trade, with specialist support from The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, a leading cancer centre based in Manchester.

The AMCE aims to tackle the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, reduce outbound medical tourism, and strengthen local healthcare capacity. As the largest specialist private hospital in West Africa, the 170-bed facility (expanding to 500 beds) offers world-class cardiovascular, haematology, and oncology services.

The centre features five operating theatres, three catheter labs, West Africa’s largest ICU, a dedicated bone marrow transplant unit, and advanced laboratories. Cutting-edge technology includes Nigeria’s first 3T MRI, West Africa’s only PET/SPECT CT, two linear accelerators, and a brachytherapy machine.

Clinical support is provided by King’s College Hospital, with oncology advisory input from The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. Future plans include a new medical and nursing school in partnership with King’s College London.

The revenue King’s generates through this collaboration is reinvested back into its NHS services.
