Gynae-oncology

What we do

We provide a comprehensive combined Gynae-oncology service with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). Patients are seen by consultants and specialists nurses at both King’s and GSTT.

At King’s we mainly carry out the diagnosis of gynae-oncological conditions such as cancer of the:

  • ovaries
  • womb
  • cervix
  • vulva.

Patients may then be treated here or at GSTT.

Most of our patients are referred to us through the rapid access clinics which take place in our Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology Scanning Unit (EPAGSU).

Preparing for your appointment

If you have been offered an urgent appointment for suspected womb (also known as uterine or edometrial) cancer (excluding suspected ovarian cancer), please follow this advice:

  • Prepare to be at the hospital for 4-6 hours. You should arrange to take the day off work.
  • Take painkillers at least one hour before your appointment and carry some with you in case you need to take a further dose before your hysteroscopy.
  • You may want to bring a friend or relative to support you. Your doctor may ask them to leave if necessary.

Conditions we treat

We diagnose and treat cancers of the ovary, endometrium (womb), cervix and vulva.

Diagnostic tests are carried out at King’s, but some treatments will be delivered at our Cancer Centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT).

As part of our Rapid Access service, we offer a one-stop, same-day consultation and diagnostic hysteroscopy for patients referred under the urgent suspected cancer pathway.

Women who are referred for suspected womb (uterine or endometrial) cancer will be offered, where indicated and agreed, a diagnostic hysteroscopy alongside their medical consultation and ultrasound scan (abdominal or transvaginal) on the same day.
