- Acute Alcoholic Hepatitis
- Advanced Chronic Liver Disease
- Oral and Gut Microbiome
- Portal Hypertension
Vishal is as a Consultant Hepatologist and Endoscopist with a focus on Advanced Chronic Liver Disease (ACLD) and related complications including portal hypertension. He is a fully JAG accredited endoscopist and certified colonoscopy trainer with advanced upper and lower GI diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy skills, including the management of refractory portal hypertensive bleeding.
He is a Principal Investigator and the group lead for microbiome in ACLD, at the Roger Williams Institute of Hepatology (Foundation for Liver Research) and Adjunct Senior Clinical Lecturer within the School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences at King's College London. Vishal’s research group focuses on metagenomic and metabonomic profiling with primary interests based around characterising and understanding the pathophysiological role of the microbiome in driving chronic liver failure syndromes, and non-antimicrobial-based therapeutic interventions that can more effectively target oral-gut dysbiosis, pathological bacterial translocation and immune dysfunction.
He has interests in the role of circulating cell-free DNA and coagulation dysfunction in chronic liver failure syndromes. He is involved in several observational and interventional translational studies in chronic and acute liver failure syndromes, including portal hypertension, acute alcoholic hepatitis and hepatic encephalopathy. Vishal is the Chief Investigator of the NIHR funded BOPPP trial (£2.2 million) evaluating the clinical effectiveness of beta-blockers in preventing variceal bleeding in cirrhotic patients with small oesophageal varices. BOPPP is aiming to recruit 1,200 patients at 40 UK-side sites, with Dr Mark McPhail as Chief Scientific Investigator.
