Patient transport

Our patient transport service is available for patients who cannot travel to or from our hospitals using any other method of transport:

  • because of their medical or mobility condition; or
  • because their medical condition would otherwise worsen.

All requests for transport are assessed on medical need by the Patient Transport Assessment Centre, and all patients must be prebooked.

The service operates with appropriate staff, equipment and vehicles including saloon cars, ambulances with wheelchair facilities, stretcher vehicles and high-dependency units.

Booking transport

To book transport, please advise your patients to contact the Patient Transport Assessment Centre a maximum of five days in advance and a minimum of 24 hours before their appointment. The centre does not accept bookings for outpatient appointments on the day of travel.

If they ask for an escort, this request will be assessed at the same time.

The centre is open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Monday mornings are the busiest time for calls, so your patients may wish to phone at another time.

  • For appointments at King’s College Hospital, patients should call 020 3299 8000.
  • For appointments at Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington Hospital, Beckenham Beacon or Queen Mary’s, Sidcup, patients should call 020 3299 6886.

Patients are then contacted by the transport provider up to 24 hours in advance to confirm their appointment.

The service is provided by Falck UK at King’s College Hospital and Savoy Ventures at Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington Hospital, Beckenham Beacon and Queen Mary’s, Sidcup.
