Paediatric oncology

What we do

The Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) is a multidisciplinary team of doctors, Macmillan paediatric oncology clinical nurse specialists, paediatric pharmacists and therapists providing chemotherapy and supportive care for children in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham who are being treated for cancer or leukaemia (blood cancer).

Care includes blood transfusions, symptom control, and urgent assessment and treatment for complications such as infections. Children receiving oncology treatment have open access to Toni & Guy Ward if they are unwell at home and have planned outpatient chemotherapy in the Philip Isaac’s Ward Day Unit or in Children’s outpatients. The team also sees children with possible leukaemia or other cancers who are referred urgently for investigation.

We work closely with the children’s oncology departments at the Royal Marsden, Great Ormond Street and University College Hospital cancer centres, and the local Community Children’s Nursing Team. We also work with the Teenage and Young Adult cancer service providing care and support for young people aged 16 or over.
