Advice and guidance

Here you will find sources of advice and guidance when setting up your research project (Commercial or Non Commercial) - plus information on sponsorship and funding.

Statistics

Both statistical advice and analysis are available for free, three days a week. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, researchers can book a session with one of the statisticians by emailing gsttresearch-support@kcl.ac.uk. Statistical advice will also be available at a drop-in session from 4pm - 5pm on each of the three days.

Research Design Service (RDS)

Research Design Service (RDS) London is part of the NIHR and provides free help to King’s College Hospital staff preparing research proposals for submission to peer-reviewed funding competitions for applied health or social care research.

Commercial trials

Commercial studies are handled by the Joint Clinical Trials Office (JCTO). If you are planning to conduct a commercial trial please contact:

Non-Commercial Trials

If you are planning to conduct research using King’s College Hospital patients, staff, samples or data, you must register with the Research and Development Department. We recommend that if you are just starting the application process, you apply for ethics approval and R&D registration and approval concurrently to save time.

Clinical Trial of an Investigational Medicinal Product (CTIMP)

To start the registration process of a non-commercial trust-sponsored Clinical Trial of an Investigational Medicinal Product (CTIMP), please contact:
Jackie Pullen

You can find out about all aspects of carrying out a CTIMP at the JCTO website.

Requesting KCH R&D sponsorship

This must be done before R&D and ethics approval.

For projects sponsored by King's College Hospital, the ‘sponsor in principle’ section of the IRAS application must be signed by Dr Zoe Harris, R&D Governance Manager, as the sponsor representative before submitting to ethics.

Electronic signatures are now used. Your REC and R&D forms can be simultaneously signed through IRAS if you follow these steps:

  • Click on ‘NHS REC' form
  • Select the ‘authorisations’ button
  • Click ‘request sponsor’, then type in Zoe's email address, z.harris@nhs.net

Please allow two - three days for your project to be reviewed. If your project is urgent, please contact Zoe directly to discuss.

Nursing, Midwifery, & Management Research

If you are a nurse or a midwife and want to carry out research at King's College Hospital, please contact:
Dr Angela Grainger
R&D Lead for Nursing & Midwifery
Email angela.grainger@nhs.net

Further support

If you are applying for project funding from the NIHR Evaluation, Trials & Studies Co-ordinating Centre (NETSCC), you can get support from the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London.

The CTU is fully registered with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) and can provide support both to medicinal and non-medicinal clinical trials across King's Health Partners. It particularly welcomes collaborations on applications to the NIHR HTA, EME, SDO, HSR and PHR funding streams.

Part of the Department of Biostatistics, it has online randomisation and validated web-based data entry systems. CTU Director Andrew Pickles is Professor of Biostatistics and Psychological Methods and Head of Biostatistics at the IoP. The unit also collaborates on non-mental health projects with Janet Peacock, Professor of Medical Statistics in the Department of Primary Care and Public Health Sciences at KCL.
