24 Hours in A&E
A new Channel 4 documentary series giving viewers behind the scenes access to King's College Hospital's Accident & Emergency Department airs every Wednesday 9pm
Filmed here at King's College Hospital over a period of 28 days, '24 Hours in A&E' consists of 14, one hour episodes filmed using 70 fixed cameras. The documentary series is the largest Channel 4 has ever made.
The series enables viewers to see the unique set of challenges - including the highs and lows - that King's A&E staff face as they treat the 350 patients that come through its doors every day.
The programmes show the way our staff work together as a team to treat seriously ill patients involved in road traffic accidents and violent assaults, as well as those patients accessing treatment for minor injuries such as scrapes and cuts and bruises.
Malcolm Tunnicliff, Consultant and clinical lead for our Emergency Department, said the series would educate and inform viewers:
"The series will show that working in an Accident and Emergency Department is incredibly challenging, but also very rewarding. Capturing on film the real mix of cases seen every day - and the efforts our staff make to try and put people back on their feet - will help educate the public about what we do here at King's."
Simon Dickson, Channel 4's deputy head of documentaries who commissioned the series, said: "24 Hours in A&E is somewhere where profound human stories – both heart-warming and tragic – happen every day. For the patients and loved ones who visit, this could be the most significant day of their lives."
"Meanwhile the staff, whose jobs are literally to save lives, see humanity in all its raw diversity. This series provides a unique portrait of modern Britain and an insight into the way we live our lives."
'24 Hours in A&E' has been produced for Channel 4 by The Garden. A number of measures were put in place – including a detailed patient consent protocol - to ensure that the confidentiality, privacy and dignity of patients was protected at all times.
If you've missed an episode you can watch it on SeeSaw. You can also go to Channel 4's 24 Hours in A&E site for more information on the series.
