King’s Awards
"King’s has an extraordinarily good-willed workforce with a true and heartfelt desire to make things better. They have hope and resilience, and it’s focused on patients."
Dr Gary Ruiz, Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician
We recognise the outstanding contributions made by our staff to hospital service and patient care by awarding King’s Commendations and Long Service Awards.
What is a King’s Commendation?
Our world-class specialities – liver, diabetes and sickle cell – are largely driven by the health problems of the ethnically diverse local community.
Serving such a population makes King’s a very special place to work, and choosing the right people is part of the key to our success.
Whatever their job or department, all members of staff, volunteers and contract workers have an important role to play to ensure that everyone who comes through our doors is treated as a Very Important Person. We try to minimise the stress of going into hospital, making the experience as positive and beneficial as possible for both patients and their relatives.
Our staff, who in this inner city specialist teaching hospital are often under great pressure themselves, are at the heart of this mission.
The King's Commendation scheme was set up to recognise those individuals who make outstanding contributions to patient care or hospital services. It is closely linked to King’s Values which underpin everything we do.
Staff who are awarded a commendation receive a certificate and silver gilt lapel badge; teams receive a framed certificate presented by the Chairman of the Council of Governors.
The most outstanding individual or team at each ceremony receives £500, which is funded by King's College Hospital Charity.
Who is eligible?
The scheme is open to all members of staff (individuals or teams), whether directly or indirectly employed by King's College Hospital or the Medical School, as well as volunteers.
How can I make a nomination?
Nominations can be made by anyone: patients, relatives, visitors, colleagues and managers who have witnessed outstanding care. An independent panel of King’s staff regularly reviews all nominations received to decide who will be put forward for a King’s Commendation.
Long Service Awards
The Long Service Award recognises members of staff with 40 or 25 years continuous, substantive service at King's College Hospital NHS Trust.
Staff who have met the qualification criteria are invited to take part in a ceremony with the Chairman of the Council of Governors and presented with a gift, funded by the King's College Hospital Charitable Trust.
